Rethinking Well-Being in Senior Living

Building Connected Communities

My approach to building joyful and connected communities was shaped by two experiences that continue to influence my work today. The first was the relationship I had with my grandmother, who showed me that meaningful connections create purpose and fulfillment at every stage of life. Through her, I gained wisdom from a lifetime of experiences, and through me, she found joy, connection, and purpose.

The second experience came early in my career as a CNA, where I saw how easily care environments could become focused on tasks and routines while overlooking the deeper human need for belonging.

Those experiences reinforced my belief that senior living should be about much more than meeting needs. It should move beyond activity calendars to create opportunities for people to build meaningful relationships, discover purpose, continue growing, and cultivate joy. When communities intentionally foster connection, purpose, and belonging, they create space for people to truly thrive. That belief continues to guide the way I think about leadership, engagement, and well-being today.

Leading with Purpose

I don’t view emotional well-being and operational leadership as competing priorities. Rather, they’re collaborators. The best operations are the ones that create space for dignity, connection, and purpose to take place naturally. Strong systems matter, but our emotional impact deeply influences the outcomes we achieve. In many ways, my approach is helping communities move from rigid routines toward a more intentional rhythm of life. Because when we design communities where people can truly thrive, we win.

Redefining Wellness

Senior living has made major progress in expanding wellness offerings. Still, the biggest opportunity is to move beyond wellness as a standalone program and create a more connected experience that supports the whole person throughout their aging journey. At Lifespark, SPARK Growth & Wellness is a powerful example of how personalized wellness can help seniors build strength, purpose, and belonging. Still, it’s just one piece of our COMPLETE Senior Living approach —our integrated system of services designed to help seniors live fuller, healthier, more independent lives.

"Some of the best ideas, strongest relationships, and most meaningful innovations come from listening closely and learning from others’ experiences and perspectives."

By connecting vibrant communities, wellness programming, healthcare services, and personalized support, we help seniors navigate changing needs with confidence while staying focused on aging magnificently.

Growing as Leaders

One of the most influential leadership lessons I’ve learned is that people are shaped by what leaders consistently model, celebrate, and expect. That’s why I strive to lead with a winner’s attitude—not in the sense of competition, but in the belief that challenges can be overcome, growth is always possible, and better outcomes can be created together. That mindset only takes root when people feel connected to a shared purpose. Rather than relying on pressure or compliance, I believe in helping teams understand the “why” behind their work and how they can contribute to something meaningful. And to keep growing as leaders and organizations, we have to stay curious. Some of the best ideas, strongest relationships, and most meaningful innovations come from listening closely and learning from others' experiences and perspectives.

Person-Centered Care

The idea of person-centered care is not built on a single large initiative. It’s created through consistently making choices that honor individuality, dignity, autonomy, and belonging. Challenge yourself to think beyond building an “activities calendar” and, rather, focus on creating a culture where well-being is woven into daily life. When communities intentionally support connection, purpose, creativity, and joy, the entire dynamic in those communities begins to change—where people can not only live safely but live fully, and continue to grow, contribute, and thrive as individuals.
