Building a Relationship-First Model for Modern Senior Living

Libby Rodriguez, Director of Sales and Marketing , North Oaks

Resident Experience Voice

Editor’s Note: For senior living leaders, care quality now depends on relationships that make residents feel known, respected and supported. This perspective matters because modern communities must balance hospitality, safety and emotional connection while helping older adults and families make confident care decisions.

Libby Rodriguez is the Director of Sales and Marketing at North Oaks, a position she has held since August 2023. She previously served as Director of Community Life Services. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Delaware before earning her master’s degree in health care administration management from the University of Maryland Global Campus. While at the University of Delaware, Libby was a member of the International Honor Society in psychology, and she earned the Blue Hen Engaged Leader Scholarship.

Before her time at North Oaks, Libby served as Community Resources Coordinator at Erickson Senior Living in Silver Spring, MD. She also previously served as the Memory Care Coordinator at Jewish Community Services in Baltimore.

Building Trust During Life’s Biggest Transitions

Working with seniors has really taught me that everything comes down to patience, trust, and kindness. In this space, you’re not just working with one person; you’re often supporting an entire family through a big life transition. I try to slow things down, really listen, and meet people where they are emotionally.

At North Oaks, we really lean into that relationship-first approach. We’re not just showing apartments, we’re introducing people to a lifestyle. Whether it’s inviting prospects to experience one of our chef-prepared meals, attend an event, or spend time in the community, it helps them picture themselves here. When people feel supported instead of sold to—and can actually experience the warmth and vibrancy of the community—it builds real trust.

Helping Families Navigate the Changing Reality of Senior Living

From a sales perspective, we’re definitely seeing people wait longer to make a move, and by that point, many have more complex care needs. That can make the transition harder and sometimes limit how much they can enjoy everything a community has to offer.

I try to help families understand the value of planning ahead—why moving earlier can really improve quality of life. At North Oaks, we’re in a great position because we offer a full continuum of care, so residents truly can age in place. But just as importantly, we offer a lifestyle that people can actually enjoy right away—multiple dining venues with flexible options, engaging programming, fitness and wellness classes, and beautifully maintained spaces that feel more like a resort than a traditional senior living community.

At the same time, I approach every conversation with empathy. It’s a big, emotional decision, and it’s important that families feel supported, not rushed.

Redefining Dining, Wellness and Everyday Living for Seniors

At North Oaks, flexibility is a huge part of what we do. We recognize that today’s seniors have different financial situations and priorities, which is why we offer both a CCRC and a rental option—something that really sets us apart.

From a lifestyle standpoint, we’re also very intentional about offering choices. Residents aren’t locked into one way of living—they can choose from a variety of dining experiences, social events, cultural outings, and wellness programs that fit their interests. Whether it’s group fitness classes, lifelong learning opportunities, or simply enjoying beautifully designed common spaces, there’s something for everyone. From a sales perspective, my role is to understand what matters most to each person and connect that back to the options we offer, so it feels personalized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Creating Flexible Senior Living Experiences Around Resident Needs

Today’s seniors are more informed, more independent, and much more lifestyle-focused. They’re not just looking for care—they want a place that feels engaging, high-quality, and flexible.

That’s something North Oaks does really well. From the dining experience to the amenities and overall environment, it feels elevated and hospitality-driven. People are often surprised by how vibrant and active the community is—it really changes their perception of what senior living can be.

Because of that, I take a more consultative approach in sales. I focus on building relationships early, inviting prospects into the community to experience it firsthand, and helping them see the lifestyle benefits—not just the future care. It’s less about “selling” and more about showing what’s possible.

Leading Senior Living Through Empathy, Presence and Community Connection

I’d say lead with empathy and be patient. This is a relationship-driven industry, and people can tell when you genuinely care.

It also makes a big difference to be part of a community that delivers on what you’re promising. At North Oaks, the quality of the dining, the amenities, and the overall resident experience really support the sales process. You’re not trying to convince people, you’re inviting them into something that speaks for itself.

Take the time to learn your product, build strong relationships internally, and really listen to the people you’re working with. If you stay focused on helping families and being a trusted resource, you’ll not only be successful, but you’ll also find the work really meaningful.
